The sums of birth rates by 5-year age groupsmultiplied by the proportion of births that were female. The gross reproduction rate
represents the average number of daughters born to a hypothetical cohort of 1,000women if they experienced the age-specific
birth rates observed in a given year throughout their childbearing years, and if none of the cohort was to die during her
childbearing years. See Table 1B-2 for the annual proportions of births that were female in 2003-2013.
e
The number of births per 1,000women in specified age group. For females under 15, the rate is calculated using the female
population 10-14 years of age. For women over 44, the rate is calculated using the female population 45-49 years of age.

The total fertility rate (TFR) is the sum of age group specific birth ratesmultiplied by the number of years in the age group (five
years in this case) and can be interpreted as the average number of children a group of 50women are expected to have between
the ages of 15 and 50 if theywere to survive until age 50. At the individual level, the 2013 TFR of 1,981 indicates that awomen
can expect to have around 2 children between the ages of 15 and 50, assuming they experience the same age-specific birth rates
as were observed in 2013.
