Table 12 presents the number of deaths andmortality rates for the top ten leading causes of death
amongArizona residentmales 65 years and older during2012. The first three leading causes of
death (atherosclerotic heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease)
amongArizona residentmales 65 years and olderwere identical with published national data and
consistently remain among the leading causes. Three conditions -Alzheimer?s disease, prostate
cancer, andParkinson?s disease - are specificallynoted. In 2012, Alzheimer?s disease ranked
fourth, representing167.2 deaths per 100,000 residentmales 65 years and older. Themortality
rate forAlzheimer?s diseasewas 36.9 percent lower formales than for females. Prostate cancer
ranked eighth. The largest number ofmaleswho died from prostate cancerwere from 75 to 84
years of age (n=206), butmales 85 years and older had the highestmortality rate due to prostate
cancer (460 deaths per 100,000). Finally,males 85 years and older had the highest rate of
moralitydue toParkinson?s disease, but the age groupwith the greatest number of deaths due to
Parkinson?s diseaseswasmales 75-84 years of age.
