Similarly, the number of deaths reported from dementia increased by84 percent during the
period, representing a 43 percent increase in themortality rate due to dementia. Also noteworthy
is the disturbing increase in the number of deaths from ill-defined/unspecified causes,
representing a 1,426 percent increase from 2002 (n=27) to 2012 (n=412).
Countering these results are several significant decreases for the period. Reductions in the
number of deaths associatedwith three diseases are noteworthy: 1) a 51 percent decrease in the
mortality rate from acutemyocardial infarction, 2) a 42 percent decrease in themortality rate
from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and 3) a 41 percent decrease in themortality rate
from stroke among females 65 years and over.
MortalityTrends amongArizonaResidentMales Age 65 andOver
Based on the leading causes of death in 2012, Table 14 andFigure 12 presentmortality trends for
residentmales 65 years and older from 2002 to 2012. From 2002 ? 2012, the greatest number of
deaths occurred amongmales ages 75 - 84 years of age (n=68,426), althoughmales ages 85 and
older experienced the greatest percent increase (39 percent) in number of deaths over this period
(2002 n=4,080, 2012 n=5,664)
