Discharge status of patients with a mental disorder as first-listed diagnosis by type of hospital record (Table 12)
The report distinguishes between the first-listed diagnosis and all-listed diagnoses. The number of first-listed diagnoses is the same as the number of discharges. All-listed diagnoses include first-listed diagnoses and secondary diagnoses and are provided for users who want to know the total number of times certain conditions have been reported for hospitalized patients. The discharge record may include more than one diagnosis of specific psychotic or neurotic conditions (i.e. anxiety and depression and drug dependence) but also a combination of diagnostic categories for both psychotic and neurotic conditions (i.e. manic depressive disorder and anxiety and abuse of drugs). Therefore, when counting all-listed diagnoses, the sum of all occurrences of psychotic and neurotic disorders (the column sum in the tables) is greater than the total number of discharges with mental disorders.
Beginning with the 2006 data year, the category of Depression, NOS (not otherwise specified or not elsewhere classified, ICD-9-CM code 311) was added to the diagnostic categories shown in the above tables. Depressive disorder NOS has no specifically manic-depressive or other psychotic depressive features and it does not appear to be associated with features specified under neurotic depression. Also, three new data tables were added beginning with 2006. They provide information about the total gross charges incurred by patients and the expected source of payment for those charges. Included in the total gross charges may be charges for conditions other than mental disorders and for treatment of those other conditions. The charges reflect prices set by hospitals and not the actual payments received from insurers and/or patients.
